We recently spoke to Justin ‘Fash’ Felton, Bristol based promoter of current brands ‘Bris-Tek’, ‘Bristol Drum & Bass Events’, the ‘Dispatch Recordings’ & ‘Meth Lab’ label nights and now taking on the ‘Metalheadz’ label nights exclusively in Bristol.
Q: Hi mate, hope you’re well? You’ve got a charity event coming up this Friday at Blue Mountain, let’s start with who & what you are raising money for and who else is involved in the event?
A: We are looking at raising money for Musical Roots, Musical Roots is a youth scheme based in Barton Hill that inspires young people to get into music and express themselves through lyric writing, performance and production.
At the moment the session has a high demand but the equipment is not up to date. We aim to raise funds to purchase DJ Equipment and vital studio hardware so that the young people can advance their talents in a regular, welcoming and Free to enter, supervised space.
All money raised will be donated to musical roots to enhance their studio equipment and facilities.
Q: What made you look into putting this event on and getting involved with the charity?
A: We came up with the idea to do one Charity Event a year and had a look around at what local charities were close to our heart and heard about the work Carasel had been doing recently with Musical Roots and went down to check out a session he was running and the rest is history really.
A: Was Blue Mountain your first choice of venue for the event?
We had a date booked in with the club from a while back and it seemed the obvious choice to use this date and venue for the Charity gig.
Q: We know TerraHawk are hyped for this event, they’ve got Infidelity dubs kept to one side specifically for this event, so you should be in for a treat! How did you go about curating this lineup?
A: The lineup kind of fell in to place through friends we already know in the scene or friends of friends. We wanted to book Bristol artists who are big in their particular field and who would also feel passionate about the cause.
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and your history in the Bristol club scene.
A: I started promoting night back in 2011 with a brand called Section 18 this was prodomintly a hardcore techno based night. My involvement with that ended when I started Bris-Tek in 2013 and since then we have also started Bristol Drum & Bass Events. Both of these brands are very successful with regular sell out nights down at The Black Swan.
Q: Are there any other people involved in the brands you run or are you alone in your ventures?
A: Both the brands are mine but I work closely with a team of people that help with all aspects of putting these nights on.
Q: Do you DJ or MC yourself, or do you just stick primarily to promoting & event management?
A: It’s all about promoting for me
Q: What is the next event you have coming up after this Friday’s charity event?
A: We have three event in April, firstly we are doing the Upstairs at Blue Mountain on the 1st along Tremor for the Wonderfields festival warm up aprty. Then on the 23rd April it’s Bris-Tek 9 at the Swan and the following weekend we are putting on the Metalheadz Label night at the same venue.
