WEEKLY SALUTE #20 – ALTERED PERCEPTION

This week’s salute goes out to a talented individual who has just released the ‘Vortex EP’ with us.

Altered Perception aka Sam Gartside, has been making penetrative ripples in world of deep, moody, stripped-back D&B for a few years now. Known for his signature expansive, reverb-loaded bass and tight drum work – when we were first sent the material which would go on to become his debut Infidelity Release, we were taken aback by it’s ruthless simplicity and spooky atmospherics – we knew we had to get this one out.

He is no stranger to modern day labelism, with no less than 4 imprints that he either owns or co-owns: Alchemic Breaks, Terrabyte Records, Transmission Audio & Sub:mission Audio. He has received support from some weighty institutions and DJs such as BBC Radio 1, Rinse FM, B.Traits, Doc Scott, Kenny Ken & Aphrodite to name just a few.

‘Vortex EP’ is out now exclusively on Beatport and can be purchased here: http://goo.gl/xikrrV

Worldwide release on all other good digital stores is scheduled for the Friday 1st of July.

We’ll provide a full list of buy links on the blog closer to the time!

WEEKLY SALUTE #19 – VOLATILE CYCLE

Never has the phrase ‘meteoric rise’ been such an apt way to describe the last 18 month’s of a D&B artists’ career than the case of Volatile Cycle. Hailing from the relative arse-end of nowhere – Norwich – Dan & James are deserving of the recognition their recent debut LP release on Renegade Hardware has yielded.

Following a glut of releases on numerous labels from around Europe, inevitably the likes of Invisible, NeuroFunkGrid, Architecture & Hardware would come knocking for this humble Norfolk based duo.

Now firmly regarded as key players in the UK Neuro scene, having joined the company of Maztek and Ink as being only the third artist to release a solo LP on Renegade Hardware since the turn of the decade.

You can preview their album on the soundcloud player below.

WEEKLY SALUTE #18 – DISPATCH RECORDINGS

As far as labels go, Dispatch Recordings is one of my personal favourites. With a level of quality control that i believe to be un-paralleled throughout this wonderfully diverse scene, Dispatch continues to push boundaries as well as nurturing some of the most exciting breakthrough artists in recent times.

Now in it’s 15th operational year, label boss Ant TC1, with the help of Alex ‘Onset’, has consistently kept the label at the forefront of deep, intelligent, rolling beats and can be credited, almost entirely, with the respective meteoric rises of various artists that are universally recognised as being some of the most talented and technically gifted producers to have made D&B in recent years, including: Octane & DLR, Survival & Silent Witness and SCAR – to name just a few.

Currently on the approach to their 100th release on the main label catalogue, having recently released Philth’s ‘The Cirlce’ EP as DIS097, the label runs two separate imprints in the form of the ‘Dispatch Limited’ series, which in recent times has boasted high level music from the likes of ‘Dubhead’, ‘Quadrant & NC-17’ and ‘Gerra & Stone’, as well as the ‘Dispatch Dubplate’ series, focussing on vinyl-only distribution of previously unreleased VIP’s of popular Dispatch material.

Not content with being one of the best labels going, the label has enlisted the help of some of europe’s best underground promoters to hold Dispatch Recordings events in major cities and at huge festivals around the continent; namely in our very own Bristol, where some of the best lineups & atmospheres can be found.

Check out this recent free download: ‘Amoss – Rollpipe VIP’, available alongside various downloadable mixes & other label material from the Dispatch Recordings soundcloud.

WEEKLY SALUTE #17 – NOISIA

One of the biggest and well respected names to have emerged from the Drum & Bass scene; revered by many across all corners of electronic music; Noisia have come back with a bang in the last couple of years after a short hiatus in 2013.

During that time it has been well documented that the Dutch trio produced the entire soundtrack for the video game ‘DmC: Devil May Cry’, as well as also previously working on mainstream album projects for the likes of ‘Hadouken!’ & ‘Tasha Baxter’, in addition to high profile remixes for the likes of ‘Robbie Williams’, ‘Moby’, ‘The Prodigy’, ‘Skrillex’ & more.

Although their backcat contains primarily Drum & Bass productions, Noisia has consistently released successfully in the worlds of Electro, Breaks, Dubstep & Grime, the latter under the alias ‘I Am Legion’ – the collaborative project that they embarked on with British Hip Hop / Grime act ‘Foreign Beggars’.

Accepted by many as one of the true pioneers & purveyors of ‘Neurofunk’, they have stayed true to the music that they have played such a huge part in popularising – trend setting at every turn, never diluting their music to suit popular culture. Their 3 labels: Vision Recordings, Invisible Recordings & Division Recordings, are as strong as ever and continue to put out some of the best and most forward thinking Drum & Bass + Bass music of it’s time.

In 2015, Noisia started a weekly podcast named ‘Noisia Radio’ which has rapidly become the goto resource for hearing unreleased music from all the biggest and best D&B labels.

WEEKLY SALUTE #16 – DAWN WALL

Dawn Wall has been the topic of hot debate within D&B circles this year. With their true identity still unknown, the marketing of this alias has caused genuine intrigue scene wide.

13174034_607532192738827_783093151925184535_n

With a varied and technically gifted style, it is hard to put your finger on who may even be contenders to be unveiled as the seemingly best kept D&B secret of the last year.

Having released 3 EP’s on Artificial Intelligence’s Integral Records shortly after appearing on the scene, they have gone on to do remixes for the likes of Lapsley & Nero – shifting the focus of the hunt for their true identity towards someone with an already established name, that is willing to not take plaudits for their better known moniker(s).

Their most recent EP ‘Longshanks’ displayed a diverse skill set, featuring multiple styles, from the gritty reese-laden roller ‘Round Table’ to the emotion-invoking liquid track ‘Spears’.

Expect much more to come from these guys &/or gals in the future.

The nosey bastard in me is dying for their true identity to be revealed!

WEEKLY SALUTE #15 – DLR

Having made his name as part of the successful duo ‘Octane & DLR’, culminating in their critically acclaimed LP ‘Method In The Madness’, the latter named artist (aka Dirty Leroi) has gone on to carve out an impressive and steadily expanding career for himself in D&B.

13071781_1281329961895618_6655718908731151765_o

A key proponent and purveyor of an ever popular funky yet soulful tech sound, his recent solo projects have seen him release an EP & feature for Platinum Breakz 4 on Metalheadz as well as his debut LP & numerous singles on Dispatch Recordings, Utopia Music & Trendkill.

Friction recently premiered his new remix of Q Project’s ‘Champion Sound’ on his Radio 1 show, forthcoming on C.I.A Records – being asked to remix such an iconic track is truly testament to his stature as an artist in 2016.

In 2015, DLR & Mako announced they were working on a collaborative LP project for Metalheadz under the alias ‘OneMind’ – you can listen to what is to come from these guys in this mix for Radio 1 below.
